Real Laughs, Real Science

If you think a Nobel Prize might be out of reach, try striving for an Ig Nobel Prize instead. The annual awards presented at Harvard honor silly scientific achievements “that first make people laugh, and then make them think.” And that latter part is important—as the LOLs offer a gateway to some important discoveries.
One of this year’s winners involved using roller coaster rides to speed up the passage of kidney stones, and found that a rear seating positions are ideal—and that’s useful information. Another winner tested the merits of saliva in cleaning gilded items.
Congrats to all the winners, and thanks for the laughs!
