Swine Devastation

African swine fever and the draconian measures necessary for containment are wiping out Central Europe’s domestic pig farms. Experts fear ASF’s creep to China and the UK could decimate over 50% of the world’s pigs, devastating markets and causing widespread food insecurity.

Harmless to humans, ASF is fatal in pigs and extremely contagious—it can live for over 2 years in frozen meat and cling to shoes and soil. There is no treatment or vaccine and a single case means extermination of entire herds.

“It’s not a matter of if [a UK outbreak] is going to happen, it’s when,” says the National Pig Association’s Zoe Davies.
