Tanzania Prez Blasts Birth Control

Tanzania’s president John Magufuli has advised couples to forego birth control because the country needs more people, local news outlets reported. Africa’s population is set to double to 2.5 billion people by 2050.

Magufuli called families seeking contraception “lazy” and unwilling to work to look after large families, and thus end up with “one or two children only.” Magufuli himself has 2 children.

The comments drew backlash on social media, where users invoked the Maputo Protocol, the African women’s rights charter which enshrines a woman’s right to choose a contraception method. Legislators responded by saying the comments do not align with national policy.
