China is censoring discussion of African swine fever, closing social media accounts and withholding information following an outbreak among pigs.
Police detained a woman in Shandong for "rumor-mongering" after she warned friends not to eat pork or chicken—even though she was referring to the risk of disease following floods, not African swine flu.
Ren Ruihong, former head of the medical assistance department at the Chinese Red Cross, said Chinese officials regard information about disease outbreaks and epidemics as a state secret: "They are now detaining people for talking about this; you can't even talk about it on WeChat."
