Denial Means Death

HIV prevalence in Nigeria is about 4%. But among gay men and MSM this figure is more like 30% with untold numbers of men—and the women they marry to avoid suspicion—unaware of their status.
Stigma means that many will not seek health services, while a lack of training for health practitioners means those who do may not receive screening and treatment. A 2014 law criminalizing homosexuality (punishable by prison sentencing or even death in some areas) has pushed the growing problem further into the shadows.
“We cannot keep ignoring the population and denying it exists,” says health professional Obinna Akamnonu.
