UN Report: Only ‘Net Zero’ Emissions Will Do
The goals of the Paris climate agreement are wildly out of reach, according to a sweeping UN report released Sunday.
There is “no documented historic precedent” for the changes needed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, raising questions about the feasibility of the report’s outlined overhaul.
The “rapid and far-reaching” shifts would mean slashing emissions by over 1 billion tons annually, nixing coal-burning by 2050, and planting carbon-storing trees on huge swathes of land now used to grow food.
When it comes to emissions, “net zero must be the new global mantra,” said Erik Solheim of the UN Environment Program.
