Libya's Department for Combatting Illegal Migration is holding thousands of refugees like Abdulaziz indefinitely. Many were intercepted en route to Italy, fleeing war and grave human rights violations in countries like Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan.
It’s "just like hell," a former detainee said of Tripoli’s Triq al Sikka center, where hundreds of men, women and children are crammed into dark halls. Last week, amid concerns staff were being infected, the IRC halted efforts to isolate TB patients, upping the chances that the disease will spread.
