Drilling Down on Diabetes

A case of diabetes is diagnosed every 21 seconds in the US. The productivity cost of this “silent disease” topped $327 billion in 2017.

POLITICO assembled a working group to share strategies for stemming the scourge.
The group agreed that effective prevention happens at the community level—not on a case-by-case basis—and addresses social determinants like poverty and accessibility of healthy food. Also, the popular shift to lower-fat foods contributed to the problem, ushering in a “diabetogenic” American diet loaded with carbs and sugar.

The problem “isn’t just about diabetes. It’s the prism for a healthier America,” POLITICO reports.
