Living It Up in Margaritaville

At Florida’s Latitude Margaritaville—a “55 and better” community—retirees are finding a new kind of paradise in downsized housing.

How to house and care for a fast-growing aging population that will enjoy better health into later decades of life is a critical concern. In the US, communities like Latitude Margaritaville are springing up to supply boutique aging-in-place opportunities. But such housing is not cheap, and developers struggle to keep pace with demand. These issues aren’t just domestic, either.

“The rapidly aging worldwide population will affect us more than global warming,” warns Andrew Carle of George Mason University.
