Repatriation Prototype

Over 20,000 El Salvadoran migrants return through San Salvador’s repatriation center every year. Since 2014, the spike in returning citizens pushed the government to overhaul the strained facilities at Dirección de Atención al Migrante with assistance from USAID and the International Organization for Migration.

La Chacra, as its known, now features over 9 government agencies, free WiFi, a children’s playroom, an air-conditioned waiting room staffed for anxious family members, and access to showers and medical care. The facility continues to expand and has become a model for how returning citizens can be best received in their home countries.
