A Vicious Cycle

Pakistan is estimated to have one of the highest abortion rates in the world, with millions of women seeking the procedure each year. But abortion is illegal under most circumstances, and back alley procedures are the norm, writes Diaa Hadid.
Most Pakistani women seeking abortions are married, poor and already have kids, according to Population Council research. Many have abortions to avoid having daughters. But under the country’s shambolic family planning system, awareness of contraception is lacking and barriers to accessing contraceptives are considerable—both factors drive abortions, as well as a ballooning population.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court has called for hearings to address family planning failures.
