VIP Treatment

Around 30 accredited hospital-based violence intervention programs are tackling America’s gun violence problem one patient at a time.
Nearly 50% of all shootings involve black men despite the fact that they comprise 6% of the population. This “murder inequality” and gun violence are deeply tied to racial and socioeconomic inequalities. Participants in the hospital-based violence intervention program—recruited from emergency rooms and hospital beds—meet regularly with case managers who help them make lifestyle changes that disrupt cycles of violence and victimization.
“The same way we got turned around, it’s possible the next person can turn around, says participant and now HVIP volunteer T.J. King.
