When Word Gets Out

Measles-rubella vaccine coverage is plummeting in Indonesia after local Islamic clerics said the jab’s porcine components render it illegal under Islamic law.

Vaccines made with pig parts have been supported by Islamic authorities in Indonesia and elsewhere, but the widespread rumors that the vaccine is haram have parents in the world’s largest Muslim country avoiding immunizations.

Vaccine coverage must hit 95% to achieve herd immunity against the disease. One sharia-law controlled region has just 8% coverage.

The answer, say experts, may be a halal-certified version.
