A Decent Proposal

Finland’s Education Minister Sanni Grahn-Laasonen is proposing to withhold state and family benefits for parents who refuse to vaccinate their children.

“Refusing vaccinations is not a private matter. Herd immunity is endangered when parents do not allow their children to receive vaccines,” Grahn-Laasonen said, echoing the sentiments of countries where parents can be penalized for not vaccinating their children.

The proposal follows the chilling diagnosis of an unvaccinated preschooler in Western Finland with measles last week—an area where, 6 years ago, anti-vaxxers launched a successful campaign and now only 75% of the population is vaccinated.
