Forced to Migrate and Marry

Thousands of women and girls are being trafficked from Burma to China, where they are forced to marry and bear children, according to a new report from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Kachin Women’s Association Thailand.

The study, designed to track the prevalence of trafficking women and girls for marriage, illuminates “the scope of the problem and to the urgent need for support services for victims,” said lead author Courtland Robinson in a news release.

Marriages are often brokered the women's families that charge up to $15,000 for young brides, according to an AFP article on the report.
