Pakistan Boots International Aid Groups

Pakistan’s human rights minister, Shireen Mazari, marked Human Rights Day today with a tweet professing Pakistan’s support–just days after expelling 18 aid groups from the country for allegedly spreading disinformation.
The expelled groups, including Catholic Relief, Plan International and World Vision, provided humanitarian, health care, education, and human rights support.

The move reflects the country’s lingering mistrust of international groups, Michael Kugelman, a Wilson Center senior associate said. Reporting for NPR’s Goats and Soda, Diaa Hadid referenced the “long-entrenched suspicions” stemming from the CIA’s use of a Pakistani doctor posing as a worker for an international vaccination program in its search for Osama Bin Laden in 2011.
