Why Patients Skip Out on Care

Why do patients drop out of HIV treatment services in Zambia? Using their own words, and those of health workers, aidsmap lays out 10 reasons, as revealed by the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia.

The investigation, published in BMJ Global Health, found that structural challenges and staffing issues both contribute to patient drop-out—though ARV services were viewed more favorably than traditional healers.

Respondents reported that crowded clinics with inconsistent hours, medical files “lost daily” and flagrant disregard for patient confidentiality contribute to drop-off in treatment.

“When you go [to the clinic] and ask [questions], they would shout at you,” one patient recalled.
