Why Weight?

We were late to the party on weighted blankets—but all it takes is one article and boom, we suddenly can’t live without one this Christmas.

Long valuable in quelling symptoms of PTSD and autism, the item has become Insta-famous and is selling like heavy hotcakes.

The phenomenon began with small-batch companies with names like Salt of the Earth Weighted Gear. Now they’re the Tickle-Me-Elmo of 2018.

But why now? Because we’re more stressed. It’s no coincidence, writes Jia Tolentino in the New Yorker, that the mass appeal of adult swaddling began with the 2016 election, which ushered in a bull market for anything labeled “stress relief.”
