The Accidental Amphibian

An ambitious endangered toad was determined to get into Hopkins … or at least the sneaker of a Hopkins scientist.
The western leopard toad hitched a ride from South Africa to Baltimore in Nancy Connell’s shoe, enduring “multiple flights, train rides and shuttles, not to mention freezing temperatures at 37,000 feet” tucked away in her luggage. When Connell—a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security—discovered the hitchhiker, she “snapped into action” to save the toad’s life.
Connell marveled over the toad’s survival skills … but regular GHN tipster Cecilia Meisner was equally impressed by Connell’s calm reaction to finding a toad in her shoe: “Those CHS scientists are a tough bunch!“
