Border Wall Call and Response

Last night, US President Trump used his first Oval Office address to ramp up a stand-off with Democrats over his demand for a $5.7 billion steel barrier at the southern border, the BBC reported.

As a partial government shutdown continues, Trump called the border situation “a humanitarian crisis, a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul,” but stopped short of declaring a national emergency.

He pointed to drugs flowing across the border and Americans “murdered in cold blood” by undocumented immigrants.

CNN fact checkers noted most heroin enters the US through legal points of entry. Research shows undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than Americans, a BBC analysis pointed out.

"Women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rebutted, speaking alongside minority leader Chuck Schumer.
