Disease X: The Great Known Unknown

Among the WHO’s top concerns is the unknown pathogen that will cause the next big epidemic: Disease X.

As impossible as it may sound, there are ways to prepare for Disease X, according to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness, based in Norway.

Currently, it takes 2-3 years after discovering a virus to develop a clinical vaccine. What if it took just 16 weeks? 2 CEPI-sponsored efforts—from The University of Queensland and Imperial College London—could achieve just that. Neither approach involves live viruses; instead, vaccines are chemically synthesized, meaning a vaccine could come about much more quickly.
