DRC: New Cases, New Hotspot

Over the weekend, 15 new Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo brought the total case count to 736. Amid a spate of new cases across multiple locations, neighboring South Sudan began vaccinating first responders and health workers yesterday.

The latest hotspot for the outbreak is Katwa, which has seen a spike in cases in the past month. Despite progress in community cooperation, many in Katwa still deny that Ebola exists, and some local groups have hindered response efforts like immunization and safe burials.

The outbreak’s death toll now stands at 459;161 suspected cases are under investigation.
