Health Care on the Brink in Zimbabwe

Doctors in Zimbabwe are performing surgery with their bare hands and using rope in place of bandages as the country’s massively underfunded health system faces collapse.

As elite politicians seek health care in neighboring South Africa, promises of affordable quality health care by the post-Mugabe leadership have gone unmet. A doctor’s strike over pay and conditions left hospitals paralyzed and ended with no resolution.

Doctors reported using plastic bags to collect urine from catheters and being exposed to blood spillage, HIV and hepatitis B. Some operations have simply been cancelled.
