In Over Their Head With Oxy

The Sackler family knew they were in deep water over OxyContin, according to a 2008 family memo. The document reveals the family’s inner workings as the legal fallout from Purdue Pharma’s marketing tactics took hold.

In the memo, a head of the clan warned that the family firm was in a dangerous position and needed to shore up loyalties for legal protection. The memo came after top Purdue Pharma executives pleaded guilty to charges of aggressive marketing.

The redacted document was unsealed as part of a Massachusetts lawsuit alleging that the family firm’s misleading marketing of OxyContin sparked the opioid crisis.
