According to official guidelines, people in wealthy countries get more than enough protein. A lifetime of high protein intake can present its own health problems—so why the obsession? It’s part of a “series of diet battles that go back half a century,” writes Bee Wilson. But while protein has emerged an irreproachable common hero, she explains why that's an age-old error.
