Resigned to Defending Science

The “anti-scientific positions and xenophobic views” touted by Italy’s populist government drove the country’s health czar to resign last month, Deutsche Welle reported.
Walter Ricciardi, an internationally recognized voice in public health, likened the government's position on science to Donald Trump's. He slammed the administration for insisting that migrants carry disease and singled out Italy's deputy prime minister for his opposition to vaccines. (As measles cases rise across Europe, France and Germany are also seeing pushback against compulsory vaccination.)
Ricciardi lamented the growing political influence on science policies. “Science has only one method and it is necessary for politics to respect it,” he said.
