Vital Innovations

The BMJ’s roundup of neglected disease innovations in South Asia shows successes towards the SDG of ending these epidemics by 2030. It also surfaces significant gaps in prevention and treatment, writes Suman Rijal of Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative of India in an accompanying editorial.

The SDG targets 5 devastating neglected tropical diseases including leishmaniasis, snakebite deaths, and neonatal sepsis. Although interventions like WASH and better antimicrobial stewardship have helped, Rijal and colleagues emphasize that success ultimately depends on multi-stakeholder collaboration, new treatments and stronger health systems informed by better data.
