The WHO has embarked on its new 5-year strategic plan, with an ambitious triple billion target: Ensuring 1 billion more people benefit from universal health coverage, 1 billion more are protected from health emergencies and 1 billion improve their overall health.
Here’s a sampling of 10 issues WHO singled out for attention in 2019:
- Air pollution and climate change: 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air daily, driving 7 million premature deaths annually.
- Noncommunicable disease: Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. cause more than 70% of deaths globally.
- The specter of a global influenza pandemic: Global success depends on correcting the weakest links in health emergency preparedness and response.
