On top of the human suffering, internal displacement costs the world almost $13 billion annually, according to a new Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre report.
The group, part of aid agency Norwegian Refugee Council, calculated the costs tied to displacement’s impact on health, shelter, education, security and income for 8 disaster-afflicted countries.
- 40 million IDPs as of the end of 2017
- Yearly financial losses ranged from $174/person in Somalia to $451 in the Central African Republic
- Over 1/3 of the world's forcibly displaced people are found in Africa—including ~6.3 million refugees and 14.5 million displaced
The Quote: “It's very good to invest in responses to crises... But the best solution would be to prevent internal displacement altogether. This can be done through, for instance, efficient disaster risk disaster strategies,” report author Christelle Cazabat told Thomson Reuters Foundation.
