Experimental Vaccine Expanded in DRC

Reversing a controversial policy, the Democratic Republic of the Congo will offer an experimental Ebola vaccine to pregnant and lactating women, and infants under 1 year old. The WHO has endorsed the change.

Supporters of the exclusion highlighted the lack of data about the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine for these vulnerable groups.

Proponents of the new policy say that, on balance, the risk is worth it given the dangers of Ebola, and presents an opportunity to fill those data gaps. Research suggests 90% of pregnant women who are infected die, and some 900 children have already been orphaned by the outbreak.
