Fracking Sends “Bomb Trains” Off the Rails

“Bomb trains” are another potentially disastrous consequence of fracking—the process of extracting oil from rock layers. Trains hauling highly explosive crude are one derailment away from causing unthinkable damage in the typically low-income and minority neighborhoods cut by poorly maintained tracks.

“It’s just a disaster waiting to happen,” says researcher Genee Smith who is studying public health impacts of rail transport of crude oil. Last year, Smith joined researchers, students and community organizations to successfully advocate for a ban on construction or expansion of crude oil terminals in Baltimore where some 165,000 people live within “blast zones.”
