Inroads for Trade... and NTDs

China’s success fighting NTDs may see some setbacks.

A study identifies 9 NTDs in danger of reemergence because of the “Belt and Road Initiative,” launched by President Xi Jinping in 2013 to boost economic relations across Asia and Africa.

Malaria, leishmaniasis, and schistosomiasis head the list.

Africa hosts some 3 million Chinese and over 430,000 Africans live near the economic hub of Shenzhen. This in- and outflux of people requires increased monitoring to minimize potential NTD inroads. But, the China-India “pharma machine” could also help curtail infections through product development, says author Bin Zhan.
