Opening the Gates

25 years ago, Bill and Melinda Gates’s route to philanthropy was carved out by learning about scores of child deaths from diarrhea: “We were surprised, then we were outraged, then we were activated.”

In their annual letter, the pair lay out some surprises of 2018:

  • Africa is the youngest continent, and investing in this young population will shape the future of the world.
  • At-home DNA tests can not only help solve crimes but could also help prevent premature births.
  • In the self-contained toilets of the future, “the real magic happens out of sight,” but they will save millions of lives.
