Putting Money Where The Minds Are

The Wellcome Trust has pledged $258.8 million to advance mental health treatment and research, an area lagging behind other health fields.

Currently, mental health issues like anxiety and depression contribute to over half of all health problems. By 2030, they may be the main cause of global mortality and morbidity. But treatment is still mainly trial-and-error, and research is siloed across psychiatrists, cell biologists, and other professionals.

Formalizing standards and protocols may enable accessibility of care—currently, only 1 in 27 people in developing countries receives proper treatment.

“Too many people are still left behind,” says Wellcome director Jeremy Farrar.
