17 + 2: Tragedy Continues

17 died in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida last February—but that was not the end. 2 survivors took their own lives in the last week, prompting activists to Tweet “17 + 2," The Washington Post reports.

The mother of one, Sydney Aiello, told The Washington Post that her daughter—frightened of classrooms and suffering from survivor's guilt following the death of her friend in the shooting—struggled with college.

The second Parkland survivor lost last week, 16-year-old Calvin Desir, was an aspiring engineer, according to the Miami Herald.
The compound tragedies are stirring efforts to help survivors, such as circulating The Columbia Protocol—a list of questions that help assess suicide risk. Former Parkland students said that nobody talked to them about suicide prevention in the aftermath of the attack, according to the Washington Post.

And on Monday, the father of a victim of the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre also ended his life.
