Africa’s Path to Universal Health Coverage

Diane Gashumba, Rwanda's Minister of Health, called on Africa's heads of state to increase domestic investments in universal health coverage, the Daily Trust reports.

Speaking at the Africa Health Agenda conference in Kigali, Rwanda this week, Gashumba called UHC one of the smartest investments a country can make, praised African leadership on UHC in the last 2 decades, and urged heads of state to keep up the momentum.

The conference aims to help unite the African community ahead of the UN High-Level Meeting on UHC in September, explains Jean Kagubare, deputy director of Global Primary Health Care Systems at the Gates Foundation in an AllAfrica commentary. “There is no better return on investment than strengthening primary health care,” he says.

He describes 3 pathways to UHC: improved measurement, investment in technology and better decisions about health spending.
