Bloompocalypse Now

For some, it’s Mother Nature’s gift to Instagram. But for residents of Lake Elsinore, California, a stunning carpet of poppies has turned into a bouquet of nightmares.

A wet winter carpeted local hills with irresistible poppies drawing “unbearable,” selfie-hungry crowds to the blooms. Local officials are scrambling for state-level support while Instagrammers, seeking the perfect “nature zen” shot, were seen battling for parking spaces and trampling flowers.

Town officials proclaimed a public safety emergency after 100,000 visitors arrived on Sunday. The town's steely mayor, however, remains optimistic: “We’ve gone through fires and floods, we’ll get through the flowers.”
