Fertility or Identity: Forced Hands in Japan

For transgender people in Japan, surgical sterilization is required for their gender to be legally recognized.

That has to stop, Human Rights Watch said in a report released yesterday.

In addition to being sterilized, applicants must be single with no kids under 20 and be diagnosed with “gender identity disorder.” The practice flies in the face of human rights and international medical standards, HRW said.

The WHO and other medical organizations have stopped referring to transgender identity as a “disorder.”
