Meteorologists Sound the Alarm
The new World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Climate report warns that we’re running out of time:
- Extreme weather events affected ~62 million people on every continent.
- Drought, flood and storms displaced more than 2 million last year.
- Heatwaves also raised “alarm bells for the public health community” as the past 4 years marked the warmest on record.
“There is no longer any time for delay,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres says in the report’s foreword. He calls on leaders to bring concrete, realistic plans to reach net zero emissions by mid-century to the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23.
