New Zealand’s Capability-Based Weapons Ban

“It’s about all of us, it’s in the national interest and it’s about safety.”
With those words, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a planned ban of military-style semiautomatic weapons in New Zealand as well as high-capacity ammunition magazines. The move follows last Friday’s attack on 2 mosques that killed 50 people.

The planned law targets “capability” rather than classes of weapons, which may lead to confusion or could become a new approach in other countries.

In contrast to the US stalemate following similar massacres, the New Zealand weapons ban is expected to easily be passed by Parliament.
