Reaching for Referrals

1 in 3 married Palestinian women are exposed to some form of gender-based violence—yet most women who seek physical treatment aren’t referred on for further care.

Hoping to change that, Palestinian epidemiologist Amira Shaheen is researching the Palestinian health care system’s readiness to identify and refer gender-based violence victims.

By teaching health care providers how to approach women sensitively, Shaheen’s project has seen women more willing to talk about violence and ask for help. Shaheen, of An-Najah National University, received the 2019 Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World–Elsevier Foundation Award for her efforts.
