Where in the World is Podoconiosis?

It's well known that podoconiosis—a form of tropical lymphoedema caused by long-term exposure to volcanic soils—causes massive swelling in the lower limbs and intense stigma. But globally there’s little detailed data on the condition’s toll, which hinders much-needed interventions in endemic countries.

A new countrywide survey of the disease in Rwanda helps kick-start “the global atlas of podoconiosis.”

The Wellcome Trust-supported study found cases are spread wide throughout Rwanda—though many go undiagnosed. The results tick the first box in any WHO action plan against neglected tropical diseases: mapping their geographical distribution.
