Yet Another Attack

On Saturday, yet another attack on an Ebola treatment center in the Democratic Republic of the Congo killed 1 police officer and left health workers injured as terrified patients waited in isolation rooms, AP reported.

The attack occurred just hours before a visit to the center by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus who urged workers to continue fighting Ebola.

Such attacks are a daily threat to Ebola responders who track cases and bury the dead, Nature’s Amy Maxmen reported. The violence has forced some facilities to suspend activities.

Now the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, over 900 people have fallen ill since early August. Amid a “toxic cocktail of violence and mistrust,” new WHO data suggests the virus is spreading undetected beyond known networks of transmission.

To unlock aid channels and spur international cooperation, health policy analysts are pressuring the WHO to declare a public-health emergency of international concern.
