The UN needs to recognize that Venezuela is in the throes of a full-scale humanitarian emergency and lead the response, according to recommendations in a new report from Human Rights Watch.
Report authors document severe shortages of food and medicine, increased spread of disease and government suppression of information about the crisis. “No matter how hard they try, Venezuelan authorities cannot hide the reality on the ground,” said co-author Shannon Doocy of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Recommendations for the UN include:
- Declaring that Venezuela faces a complex humanitarian emergency
- Tasking the UN emergency relief coordinator with leading a full-scale response
- Obtaining Venezuelan data for a humanitarian assessment
