“Blighty” Blighted by Knife Crime

Youth violence in London—with knife crime its best-known manifestation—has reached its highest point in a decade. “Penetrating-trauma injuries” tripled in certain hospitals from 2010-2017.

The city is addressing the knife crime crisis as a public health issue, with steps like embedding youth workers in emergency rooms. One, Franklyn Addo of the NGO Redthread, approaches victims in the immediate aftermath of violent assault and works to turn the trauma into “teachable moments” that could change a victim's life trajectory.

But focusing on knives may be missing the point, Addo cautions: The real danger “is the desperation that causes you to weaponize anything around you.”
