Brunei Enshrines Brutality into Law

As of yesterday, extramarital sex, gay sex and abortion are punishable by stoning death in Brunei.

The brutal new law took effect yesterday despite widespread international condemnation and calls to boycott Brunei-owned luxury properties like the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Rape and some forms of heresy and blasphemy are also punishable by death under the new law; other crimes will be punished by amputation and whipping.

The tiny monarchy of just 430,000 people in Southeast Asia has enormous oil wealth. Its Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who is also the prime minister, justified the move under Shariah law, which can be interpreted in myriad ways.
