Continuing Crisis

A month after Cyclone Idai hit southern Africa, killing more than 1,000 and leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless, the suffering continues.

The Numbers, according to Reuters:

  • People affected: Mozambique: 1.85 million; Zimbabwe: 250,000; Malawi: 868,895
  • Mozambique: Nearly 5,000 cholera cases; 8 cholera deaths
  • Recovery cost: More than $2 billion, per the World Bank.

Amnesty International also called for a focus on building the resilience of the most at-risk people “due to pre-existing patterns of exclusion and discrimination … to minimize the impact of disasters on human rights.”
