Family Photos Become Facebook’s Illicit Marketplace

Child marriage is entrenched in Nigeria’s Becheve community: Girls as young as 10 are sold as “money wives” to older men.

Recently, boys in the large tribe that encompasses 17 villages have been helping their fathers transact business  by using Facebook to post photos of “available” daughters on their profile pages.
The young men introducing their fathers to Facebook may actually be the ones to help drive change, says Nigerian anti-child marriage advocate Odey—“Young people have a huge role to play in putting a stop to this brutal tradition.”
Elsewhere, Facebook has halted auctioning of child brides though spokespeople say they weren’t aware of this practice in Nigeria.
