Mandatory Vaccines for Brooklyn Communities

New York City officials declared a public health emergency yesterday and ordered mandatory measles vaccinations over an outbreak centered in an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn.
Officials tie Brooklyn’s eruption of cases—at least 285 since September, mostly in the Williamsburg neighborhood—to frequent travel to hot spots and anti-vaxxers spreading misinformation.
Spanning 4 Brooklyn zip codes, the vaccination order is the US’s biggest in decades. Resistors will face misdemeanor charges and fines up to $1,000.
Some doubt that will suffice. “If you’re a hard-core anti-vax believer, a misdemeanor conviction and a $1,000 fine is not going to change your mind,” said Stanford University professor Michelle Mello.
