With Malawi and neighboring countries in Cyclone Idai’s wake facing a Herculean recovery mission, the rough roads highlight another fundamental global health need, the Global Health Corps fellow says: the importance of safe, reliable transportation.

Her experiences—from seeing people who turn down referrals because they can’t get to clinics during the rainy season, to vehicles in constant need of maintenance—reinforce the truth of studies showing how poor quality roads hurt health delivery.
